DAY 6: STONE CREEK TO TUCKUP CANYON, MILE 165

Breakfast this morning is French toast, bacon, and melon.  Everyone is required to make a sandwich and put it in a paper sack as we are going to have lunch on the raft in the River.

Bec tells a story about William Wallace Bass when he purchased a piano for his wife, Ada.  During a high water period or a strong rapid the piano was knocked off the raft it was on and now sits high on the bank.

We reach Deer Creek Falls, mile 137, around 8:30.  This place is normally packed with rafts.

Most of the people hike up to the Narrows and the Patio.  I have been there several times, so I'm just going to stay here in camp.  Someone has put a message in the sand in the third picture below ("Will you marry me").  It is only a short distance over to Deer Creek Falls, so I walk there and get a good picture of it.  It is the highest falls in the Grand Canyon.  It and Elves Chasm are the two most photographed places in the canyon.

We leave Deer Creek Falls around 11:00 and motor down to a nice flat area.  On one of the rapids going there a foot bar on the front of the raft broke off.  Tim and I are welders and both agree that the weld penetration was not deep enough on this.  Several people get their sandwiches out of their paper sacks and begin having lunch.  Cliff has been playing the guitar while several in the group jump off the boat and swim some.

We decide to move downstream some.  On the way we see a large bird's next on top of a rock in the River.  That seems like a risky move for the bird in case the water level rises some.

We see some oar rafters, so we stop and talk with them a while.  We give them some of the ice blocks from our ice chests that no longer have any food in them.

We move on to mile 144 and make the run through Kanab Rapids, which are very long.  We then move down to Upset Rapids at mile 150 and stop to watch the oar rafters go through.

Our next stop is Havasu Rapids at mile 157.  We get there around 3:30.  Bec turns the boat around backwards and makes a nice move downstream to park our raft next to Cliff's raft.  The rapids are still fairly strong here.  We meet a couple just leaving.

There is a little rock climbing needed to make it up to Havasu Creek.  It is a pretty light blue color like the LCR was.
