The Tanner Trail starts at Lipan Point just west of the Desert View area.
A parking lot is available for your car. The trail begins a very rapid
descent with numerous switchbacks. Some areas have loose rocks, so watch
your footing. When you reach Stegosaurus Rock, aptly named when viewed
from the side for the vertical fin-like rocks on top, stay to the east side and
not on top. As you pass Escalante Butte, the trail begins to level out,
turns to the west, and starts two wide loops that eventually pass Cardenas Butte.
After looping around to the east and a few more ups and downs, you approach the Redwall, which makes for a
great camping spot with fantastic views of the Colorado River. The trail
down the Redwall is steep but not as hard as some. After descending the
Redwall, you come to one minor narrow section and then another two miles of
steep trail before reaching Tanner Rapids at the river. There is no water
on the Tanner Trail.
