A great side trip from Indian Garden is the
trail out to Plateau Point. The trail begins by the mule holding pens on
the north side of Indian Garden. Proceed to the west and cross the creek
and then head north on the well established trail. It has a few ups and
downs at the start, but there is little elevation change after that all the way
to Plateau Point. The total distance is 1.5 miles each way, but it seems a
lot farther because much of the trail is sandy, which makes walking difficult.
The Tonto Trail junction is at the half-way point. When you reach Plateau
Point, make your way to the guard railing for fantastic views in all directions
and of the Colorado
River looking straight down about 1300 feet. If heights do not scare you
too much, you can go about fifteen feet to the east of the guard railing and
jump down on a ledge. There is no railing here, but if you creep over to
the edge, you can see a waterfall looking down to the southeast toward the
Devil's Corkscrew that is not visible when hiking up the corkscrew.
Extreme care should be taken if you elect to attempt this view. The last
time I was out there, the wind was blowing quite a bit and buffeting us around
so much that I could not safely get close enough to the edge to see the
waterfall.
