I have been looking forward to this hike
for several months after completing the Thunder River - Deer Creek hike last
fall. Art Just, my long time friend, and Marsha, one of my
contributing authors, are joining me. Marsha is a very
experienced Canyoneer and we are glad to have her on this hike. Our
plan was to go down the New Hance Trail, up to Hance Creek, then to Horseshoe
Mesa, and finally out the Grandview Trail. I had my permit in hand when a rock slide
closed the Grandview Trail, making that trip impossible. I called the
Backcountry Office and got my permit changed to go down the New Hance, east
across the Escalante, and up the Tanner. This will be an aggressive
and lengthy itinerary, so I hope we are up to the task. The New Hance
is a little unique in that there is not a parking lot at the trailhead.
Shari, Art's wife, is here with her car also, and is going to help get
people and gear to the trailhead. I am going high tech with my new
hiking GPS with topographical software installed and a pocket size digital
recorder.
